The precision on the court for the game of pickleball is as crucial as the care given to your equipment. One way to ensure optimal performance on the court is to properly maintain and store your pickleballs. Pickleballs, like the Vulcan VPRO FLIGHT, are made of plastic or resin materials. They are prone to changes in extreme temperatures. Below-freezing temperatures make pickleballs brittle and vulnerable to breaking. Very high temperatures, however, make pickleballs play softer. Both extremes create changes in performance, which is not ideal for a consistent pickleball game.

As the manufacturers of the Official Ball of the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball, Vulcan is particularly invested in the care of pickleballs, so here are the best tips for extending the life of your gear.

Store with Care

To keep your pickleballs in top condition, store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing them in areas prone to temperature fluctuations, such as garages or attics. A temperature-controlled environment will help maintain the integrity of your pickleballs for longer.

Investing in a quality container is a wise choice. When not in use, use containers that provide adequate ventilation to prevent moisture buildup. (The Vulcan VPRO FLIGHT Pickleball Sleeves are reusable and have a window for ventilation, for example.)

When on the courts, look for containers that provide adequate protection from external elements and are designed to keep the balls secure during transport. In extreme temperatures, tournament directors can even use coolers to keep the temperature of the pickleballs consistent. On the pro tours, referees sometimes transport balls from a large cooler to the courts in smaller coolers to try maintaining optimal performance in extreme climate conditions. Proper containers not only help maintain the condition of your pickleballs, but they also make it easier to organize and carry them to your next game with ease.

Rotate, Rotate, Rotate

To ensure even wear and tear on your pickleballs, consider rotating them between games. By using different balls during each session, you can prevent excessive wear on a single set and extend the lifespan of your pickleballs. A well-rotated set of balls leads to consistent gameplay and helps you stay on top of your pickleball game, while extending the lifespan of your pickleballs.

Cleanliness is Key

Dirt and debris from the courts can affect the flight and bounce of the ball, ultimately impacting your gameplay. If you’ve been on courts that are feeling a little more dirty than usual (looking at you—fall leaves and pollen), try wiping down your pickleballs with a damp cloth to remove any surface grime and dry with a clean towel. If a deeper clean is necessary, consider using a mild dish soap.

Wear and Tear Is Inevitable

Outdoor pickleballs do generally need to be replaced more than their indoor counterparts—mostly because several factors can impact the wear and tear of the ball, including the frequency and skill level of play and the playing conditions. If you see visible damage, such as cracks, or hear a change in the sound the ball makes off your paddle face, then it’s time to use a new ball on the court.

However, caring for your pickleballs by following these tips and tricks will maximize their performance and lifespan. Vulcan is committed to not just making balls, but continuing to advance the innovation of pickleballs for the sport itself, one perfectly maintained ball at a time.
